Transforming Health and Care Systems project

Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS)

The Scottish Government’s Digital Health and Care team is a partner and work package leader in a new Horizon Europe funded project European Partnership on Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS).

The project, which is led by the Italian Ministry of Health, has 64 partners from 26 countries and will be focussing on the transition towards more sustainable, resilient, innovative and high-quality people-centred health and care systems.

THCS core activity is the funding of research and innovation projects through joint transnational calls on common priorities and topics. In parallel, a set of side activities bridging the gap between science and policy, supporting capacity building and implementation will also be promoted.

The kick-off event was hosted in February 2023 in Rome by the Italian Ministry of Health and brought all partners together for the first time.

Representatives from the European Commission’s Directorates for General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) and for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT), as well as the newly established European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA), were also present at the meeting testifying the strategic importance and EU-added value of this initiative.

The first transnational Joint call Healthcare of the Future has been launched.

The goal of this Call is to identify, develop and implement innovative solutions that can inform decision-making and optimise the delivery of health and care services across different settings.

In particular, the Call aims:

1. To provide the necessary knowledge to build the health and care of the future. This includes addressing several dimensions of health and care systems such as quality, safety, equity, efficiency, effectiveness, accessibility, sustainability, economy, ethics and resilience in reorganised health and care settings. By providing this knowledge, the call aims to support the development of new and innovative solutions that can address the current and future challenges facing health and care systems.

2. To support the implementation of innovative solutions on a larger scale. This includes identifying and promoting the adoption and transferability of evidence-based and successful practices that have already been proven to be effective in some contexts in addressing the challenges facing health and care systems. With research and innovation supporting the implementation of these existing solutions, the call aims to accelerate the pace of change and make a positive impact on health and care systems in a more efficient way.
